Sealants

Protective coatings preventing cavities

Applying a thin plastic coating to the grooves on the chewing surfaces of healthy, cavity-free teeth is known as a dental sealant. Sealants provide a physical barrier that “seals out” the food particles and germs that cause tooth decay. Sealants are 100 percent successful at preventing tooth decay when used properly.

95% of people eventually get one or more cavities. The back teeth, which are most susceptible to decay and cavities, are the ones that receive sealants the most frequently. The toothbrush bristles can’t fit within the deep grooves on these teeth because they are too small. Food particles and bacteria can get stuck in these grooves and cracks because they are challenging to clean. Although fluoride is an excellent weapon in the fight against tooth decay, it only affects the teeth’s flat surfaces. Sealants work best when used to protect the grooves of teeth.

Sealants are a highly economical approach to keep your oral health. A single tooth’s sealant protection often costs less than a standard amalgam (silver) filling and only a small portion of what a root canal or crown restoration would cost. Sealants typically provide protection for several years.

Not just for children…

The extra security that sealants offer is advantageous to both kids and adults. Sealants are very advantageous for kids for a variety of reasons. It takes a full three years for the enamel on a newly erupted tooth to develop. Young teeth are particularly susceptible to decay as a result. Additionally, it might be challenging for kids to practice good dental hygiene. However, it is never too late to have sealants; as adults are equally susceptible to dental decay, they ought to think about getting them, particularly if they have other risk factors for cavities.

Causes of sealants
to maintain children’s dental health as they grow into adults and to shield people from developing dental issues in the future.
avoiding dental decay will save time and money in the long run, especially when risk factors are present (such as a history of cavities, poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, and inadequate fluoride consumption).
Sealants have a long lifespan and are quite durable. But just like with the majority of dental treatment, they can eventually need to be repaired or replaced.
All of the back teeth can be sealed in a single quick treatment that lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. With air abrasion, the teeth will first receive a thorough cleaning. The surface of the teeth will next be roughened by your dentist using an etching solution so that the sealant material will attach more effectively. The sealant substance is then gently put to the tooth grooves once the chewing surfaces have been sufficiently cured. The substance is made hard enough that it can be firmly attached to the teeth for a tight protective seal using an ultraviolet light or laser.
Your procedure is finished after a thorough check to make sure the seal is reliable.
